Ride 80 km Through the Frozen Steppe: Mongolia’s Ultimate Winter Horse Endurance Challenge

A Unique Horseback Adventure in the Mongolian Winter

In February this year, together with my horse-loving friend Boloroo, we organized a unique 80 km long-distance horseback endurance challenge through deep winter snow. The event tested the strength, endurance, and spirit of Mongolian riders and the legendary resilience of Mongolian horses.

For centuries, horses have been the fastest and most reliable means of transportation across the vast Mongolian steppe. In ancient times, Mongolia operated a sophisticated horse relay system, where messengers would ride around 40 kilometers between relay stations before changing horses and continuing their journey. This system allowed news and messages to travel incredibly fast across the empire.

Inspired by this historic tradition, we revived the concept by organizing a two-horse endurance race for local horsemen. Each rider competed with two horses — riding one while leading the other — just as riders did centuries ago. The goal was to test both the endurance of the Mongolian horse and the physical stamina of modern-day horsemen.

Reviving Mongolia’s Horse Culture

In recent years, many nomadic herders across the steppe have gradually replaced horses with motorcycles and vehicles in their daily lives. While convenient, this shift risks weakening one of Mongolia’s most important cultural traditions — the deep connection between Mongolians and their horses.

For this reason, we have been organizing initiatives that promote and protect Mongolia’s nomadic horse culture. One of the largest of these events is the “Steppe Thousand Horse Festival”, which celebrates Mongolia’s rich horse heritage. The event will take place for the 12th time on November 27–28, 2026.

Racing Through –25°C Winter Conditions

This winter endurance race brought together 12 experienced horsemen, all of whom completed the 80 km journey despite the harsh winter weather. With temperatures dropping to –25°C, riders crossed deep snowdrifts and the vast open steppe before reaching the finish line.

The race proved once again the remarkable endurance of the semi-wild Mongolian horse, a breed that has adapted for thousands of years to survive Mongolia’s extreme climate.

A Horseback Experience Travelers Can Join

Adventure travelers now have the chance to experience this incredible challenge themselves.

Participants can ride authentic Mongolian horses across the winter steppe, following the same endurance route used by local horsemen. The journey begins in the morning and riders typically reach the finish line around 4:00 PM, where local herders welcome them at the end of the ride.

Riding through Mongolia’s frozen landscapes on a powerful steppe horse is not just an adventure — it is a chance to experience the spirit of the nomadic world.

If you are looking for one of the most authentic winter horseback adventures in Mongolia, this endurance challenge may be the experience of a lifetime.
